About How 2 Drum

A blog born from one family's journey through the world of drums, music lessons, and raising a kid who just loves to play.

John's Story

John started playing the drums when he was just 3 years old. We didn't come from a musical family — nobody played an instrument, and we had no idea what we were getting into. But from the moment he sat behind a kit, something clicked.

What began as a casual "let's see if he likes it" turned into a genuine passion. Within weeks, he was practicing every day. Within months, he was playing along to songs. And over the years, he's grown into a confident, skilled drummer who's performed on stage, passed exams, and developed a real love for all kinds of music.

The journey hasn't always been smooth. There were times when progress felt slow, when practice was a battle, and when we questioned whether we were doing the right thing. But looking back, starting drums early was one of the best decisions we ever made for our son — not just musically, but in terms of discipline, confidence, and personal growth.

The Family

We're the La Greca family. Jason and Rei are the parents navigating this musical adventure, and John and Miya are the kids. Jason works in technology, Rei keeps everything running smoothly, and both of us have learnt more about drums, music theory, and stage fright than we ever expected.

We're based in Australia, and this blog reflects our experience — the teachers we've found, the gear we've bought (and returned), and the lessons we've learnt along the way.

Why This Blog Exists

When John started drumming, we searched everywhere for practical advice. What sticks should a 3-year-old use? Is an electronic kit worth it? How do you know if a teacher is any good? Most of the information we found was aimed at adult musicians, not parents.

How 2 Drum is the resource we wish we'd had. It's written for parents — not professional musicians. We cover the questions that real parents actually ask: when to start, what gear to buy, how to handle stage fright, and how to keep a kid motivated when practice feels boring.

Every article is based on our real experience. No sponsorships, no affiliate links, no gear company partnerships. Just honest advice from a family who's been through it.
